Whole House Surge Protector

The Generac Surge Protection Device guards against surges in the electrical grid caused by lightning, utility switching, power surges, and any other voltage transient in your local distribution lines. Transients and surges enter your home’s electrical system from the grid and damage your electronics, appliances, smart home devices, and lighting fixtures.

The 2020 National Electrical Code requires a Surge Protection Device in all new service installations and replacements. Power Surges, Spikes, and Voltage Transients may cause gradual damage over time to smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, AFCI and GFCI circuits which may to fail to operate when needed.

The damage is not visible and periodic tests don't reveal the problem until it causes an inexplicable failure. Mobile phones, computers, televisions and other electronics are also at risk. Modern appliances like refrigerators, washers, and dryers also have electronic components easily damaged by power surges and voltage transients. A Whole House Surge Protector blocks the surges and transients from entering your home.

Generac Surge Protection Device

The Generac Whole House Surge Protector has a NEMA 4 enclosure for installation indoors or out. It installs in the main service panel or service rated transfer switch. Thermally protected Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) activate when voltage rises above 150/300 Volts AC. When a power surge traveling the lines reaches your home, the MOVs redirect the surge voltage to ground, preventing it from entering your home and causing damage.

Whole House Surge Protection

The Generac Surge Protection Device has two modes of operation on a standard 120/240-Volt household or small business single phase installation. With connections from Line to Line and from Line to Neutral, it shunts high voltage surges to ground in Type 1 and Type 2 applications.

Per the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) 230.67 Surge Protection

(A) Surge Protective Device. All services supplying dwelling units shall be provided with a surge protective device (SPD).

(B) Location. The SPD shall be an integral part of the service equipment or shall be located immediately adjacent thereto.

Exception: The SPD shall not be required to be located in the service equipment as required in (B) if located at each next level distribution equipment downstream toward the load.

(C) Type. The SPD shall be a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD.

(D) Replacement. Where service equipment is replaced, all of the requirements of this section shall apply.

The installation of a Generac Surge Protection Device meets the NEC 230.67 requirements for whole house surge protection.
